Today, we celebrate Presidents Day. We reflect on our president’s successes and failures, and we honor the Presidents who sacrificially and courageously served our nation. 

President George Washington once said,

“[T]he [federal] government . . . can never be in danger of degenerating into a monarchy, and oligarchy, an aristocracy, or any other despotic or oppressive form so long as there shall remain any virtue in the body of the people.”

America’s form of government is unique. The people hold all the power to choose leaders. Our founding fathers knew that this system of government, this great American experiment, would only survive if the people had virtue. 

John Adams, the second President of the United States, said it this way, 

“[I]t is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue.”

President Lincoln boldly stated in his Second Inaugural Address,

“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in…”

All of our nation’s presidents had flaws. None were perfect men. Even so, their lives and leadership have relevant lessons for us today. We should never stop learning about our country’s history.
